Shoes are one of the most frequently used items in our daily lives. In this fast-paced era, many people, like you, hope to save time by quickly cleaning them in the washing machine.
However, many people are unsure of the correct method and worry about damaging their shoes or the washing machine. In the following, I will explain how to properly wash shoes in a machine and avoid common cleaning mistakes.

ToggleWhich Shoes Can Go in the Washing Machine?

In fact, not all shoes can be cleaned in the washing machine. Typically, shoes made from synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, such as sneakers and hiking shoes, are well-suited for machine washing.
However, shoes made of leather, suede, or those with many decorations are not suitable for machine washing. Examples include dress shoes, high heels, or boots, which should only be cleaned by hand.
Can You Put Shoes in the Dryer?
I usually don’t recommend putting shoes in the dryer because the high heat can cause them to warp, loosen glue, or even damage the upper. The best method is to let the shoes air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. If you want to learn more tips about drying shoes in a dryer, click here.
What Do You Need to Prepare?
Before you start cleaning your shoes, you’ll need to gather some tools and materials.
Tools
- A soft-bristled brush or an old toothbrush
- A mesh laundry bag
- Towels or other soft padding
Materials
- Mild laundry detergent
- Baking soda (optional)
- White vinegar (optional)
Steps to Clean Your Shoes
1. Remove the Shoelaces and Insoles

To prevent insoles from warping or shoelaces from tangling and potentially damaging the washing machine, you should remove the insoles and laces beforehand and wash them separately by hand.
Use a soft brush with detergent to gently scrub the insoles. To deodorize, sprinkle baking soda on them and leave it overnight. The next day, brush off any remaining baking soda.
2. Clean the Shoe Surface

Before washing the shoes, use a soft-bristled brush or a damp cloth to remove dirt from the surface. There’s no need to scrub too hard – just focus on wiping off the most stubborn dust.
3. Clean the Soles

Now, fill a small cup with warm water and add a spoonful of detergent. Use a soft-bristled brush dipped in the solution to scrub the soles, making sure to remove any pebbles or debris stuck in the grooves.
4. Place the Shoes in a Mesh Laundry Bag

Place the cleaned shoes into a mesh laundry bag to prevent them from rubbing directly against the inside of the washing machine. If you don’t have a laundry bag, you can use an old pillowcase as a substitute.
5. Put the Bag and Padding into the Washing Machine

You can place a few old towels in the washing machine along with the shoes. The towels act as a cushion, reducing noise from the shoes hitting the drum and balancing the load to prevent excessive vibration.
6. Wash the Shoes on a Gentle Cycle

Set the washing machine to a “gentle” or “delicate” cycle, with water temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F). This helps prevent heat from damaging the glue and materials of the shoes. Use half the usual amount of detergent to avoid excessive foam, which can be difficult to rinse out.
7. Let the Shoes Air Dry

Take the washed shoes out and place them in a cool, shaded area to air dry for 24 hours. To help maintain their shape, crumple some newspaper and stuff it inside the shoes. Once the shoes are completely dry, insert the insoles and re-lace them.
Does the Washing Machine Need Cleaning After Washing Shoes?
I believe it’s necessary because shoe soles are a major hotspot for bacteria. Reports show that the soles of worn shoes can carry up to 44 million bacteria, including nine types that can cause stomach and respiratory infections.
To do this, pour 200-300 ml of washing machine cleaner or white vinegar into the machine and run a high-temperature empty cycle to thoroughly clean the interior.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES
Can Washing Shoes Damage the Washing Machine?
It’s possible. Heavier shoes can create an imbalance in the washing machine, potentially shortening its lifespan. To reduce the impact, you can place old towels or sponges in the machine as padding to cushion the shoes during the wash.
Can Shoes Shrink in the Washing Machine?
It depends on the material of the shoes. Washing at high temperatures can cause the upper to shrink or deform. When washing shoes, it’s best to use warm or cold water.
Is It Hygienic to Wash Shoes in the Washing Machine?
Washing shoes directly in the machine without cleaning them first is not very hygienic. I recommend pre-treating the shoes by scrubbing the surface and soles before machine washing. This not only makes them cleaner but also helps extend their lifespan.
